Ronald Larivee, 73

Meet Ronald Larivee

Born in Iroquois Falls, Ontario, Ron grew up in a lively family of seven siblings, where family, community, and hockey were at the heart of everyday life. A lifelong Montréal Canadiens fan, his passion for the game inspired a career in recreation, where he coached, refereed, and created opportunities for young people to build confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging through sport.

Ron's impact was especially meaningful in northern Ontario, where he helped create opportunities for girls to play hockey at a time when few existed. What began as a desire to give his own daughters the same chance to play as boys grew into a broader movement that connected rural communities, brought young athletes together, and fostered friendships that have endured for decades. His commitment to community continued in Schreiber, where he helped establish the town's Winter Carnival, and later in Essex, where he remained actively involved in youth hockey and inclusive recreation, supporting children and adults with disabilities.

In recent years, Ron has faced significant health challenges, including prostate cancer, diabetes, and bladder cancer. Through it all, his resilience, optimism, and devotion to his family have never wavered. His wish to watch the Montréal Canadiens play on home ice at the Bell Centre alongside his son, Michael, has now become a reality. After a lifetime spent giving back to others and strengthening the communities around him, Ron was able to share an unforgettable experience with his son, creating lasting memories and celebrating the game, the family bond, and the spirit of community that have defined his life.
