Meet Raymond Morris

Raymond has always felt most at home near the ocean. Raised in the small coastal community of Sandpoint, Nova Scotia, he grew up with salt air in his lungs and the rhythms of the sea shaping his life. Leaving school in Grade 9 to begin working, he built a lifelong career connected to the water, from loading freighters in Mulgrave and working on draggers to serving on vessels throughout Atlantic Canada.

Later, Raymond moved to Ontario with his wife, where he worked at Dofasco and as a crane operator with ACL before returning home to Nova Scotia when their daughter was nine. Now 86, he recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. Despite health challenges, including heart issues, fatigue, and a previous heart attack, Raymond’s resilience and steady spirit have never wavered. One of his proudest accomplishments came when he helped establish a local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in Guysborough County.

Although he can no longer spend his days on the water fishing, Raymond has never lost his connection to the ocean or his dream of visiting Newfoundland. The rugged outports of “The Rock” have long called to him, not only for their beauty, but for the people, stories, and way of life that feel familiar to his own coastal roots.

That dream finally became a reality when Raymond travelled to Newfoundland with Deb, exploring communities he had imagined for years. He took in the coastline, connected with locals, and even shared his journey with NTV during his visit to Petty Harbour. Before returning home, Raymond was already thinking about a future trip, this time hoping to bring his wife along so she could experience the place he had dreamed of seeing for so long.

For Raymond, the journey was more than a visit. It was a return to something deeply connected to who he is: the ocean, the stories, and the coastal communities that have shaped his life. After years of dreaming about “The Rock,” he finally had the chance to stand on its shores and experience it for himself.
