Judith McNeil, 82
Meet Judith McNeil, 82
Judith has loved to sing for as long as she can remember. Growing up in New Waterford, Cape Breton, she was the eldest of five sisters and the only one who would eventually leave home. Even as a child, her gift was unmistakable. Her school music teacher saw something special in her voice and went so far as to visit her house to encourage her mother to consider lessons. But with the family struggling to make ends meet, lessons simply were not possible. Still, that moment never left Judith. It stayed quietly tucked in her heart for a lifetime.
At 21, Judith left Cape Breton and married a fellow Cape Bretoner serving in the Air Force. Their life together carried her across the country, from Cold Lake to Ottawa to Kelowna and finally to Trenton. They built a life filled with shared memories and raised two children, Charles, now a retired OPP officer, and Paula, who lives in Vancouver. In time, their paths gently diverged, and while living in Trenton, the marriage came to an end. Judith chose to stay, creating a warm and steady home for her children and raising them on her own with strength, grace, and unwavering devotion.
She lives by a motto that has guided her through every season of life:
“Get up, dress up, show up, and don’t give up.”
Those words reflect the resilience, optimism, and quiet courage she brings to each day, even after a COPD diagnosis that required her to retrain her lungs and adjust to new challenges.
Through it all, music remained her lifelong dream. When Judith once shared with her daughter Paula the story of the teacher who had recognized her potential all those years ago, Paula knew exactly what to do. For Judith’s 80th birthday, she gave her the gift she had waited a lifetime for: voice lessons.
Since then, Judith has blossomed. She now sings with two fellow students who call themselves the Golden Voice Girls, performing in retirement homes and bringing joy wherever they go. Under the guidance of her instructor, Douglas Von Edelmann, she has developed a deep appreciation for the discipline, athleticism, and artistry behind singing. She has even begun studying opera, and the thought of future stage or acting lessons fills her with excitement. Still, one dream remained. She longed to see a live opera and perhaps stand on an opera stage herself.
Through careful planning, that dream unfolded in the most extraordinary way. Judith received tickets to see her favorite opera, Roméo et Juliette. Thanks to the generosity of the Canadian Opera Company, the experience became even more magical when she was surprised with seats in the Royal Box and a backstage visit after the performance. Then came the moment she had imagined for decades. Standing in the center of an empty theatre, with her granddaughter Rebecca beside her, Judith sang. Her voice echoed through the space, filled with emotion, gratitude, and pure fulfillment. It was everything she had dreamed of and more.
At 82, Judith continues to show the world what is possible when you refuse to let age define your dreams. She is living proof of her own words.
