Janet Bertrand, 78
Meet Janet Bertrand, 78 years young, from Chester, Nova Scotia.
Janet has spent a lifetime working hard, caring for her family, and giving to others. But despite the years behind her, one dream still lingered: she wished to feel the thrill of riding on the back of a motorcycle. At 20, Janet left home in search of adventure, spending time in Ontario picking peaches before returning to Nova Scotia, where she dedicated herself to the hospitality industry. Whether she was a prep cook, dishwasher or waitress, her joy came from serving others.
Family has always been at the heart of Janet’s life. She raised two daughters and now cherishes her five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren—with one more on the way. She created many cherished memories with them, but life also brought heartbreak, losing one of her daughters a few years ago. While she stays connected with her grandchildren over the phone, her world has slowly grown smaller.
Today, Janet lives in a seniors’ residence, spending much of her time in her apartment watching TV, playing bingo and not socializing much. But when she met her friend Pauline two years ago, something changed. While discussing lifelong dreams, Janet casually mentioned that she had always wanted to ride on the back of a motorcycle. She had never pursued it, and at 78, it seemed out of reach. But Pauline knew this was something special—and she wasn’t going to let the dream fade away.
With the help of Shane MacDougall from Auto Lane and Cycle and his generous friends, on October 10, 2024, Janet’s wish came true. That day, the sound of revving engines filled the air outside Janet’s residence, as residents and staff gathered (some holding back tears). Dressed for the ride, Janet placed her hands on the small step stool, took a deep breath, and with support from Shane and his friends, climbed onto the back of the bike.
As the road stretched ahead, Janet felt something she hadn’t in years—pure exhilaration. For those precious moments, she wasn’t just a senior in an apartment—she was free. When she returned, her excitement was unmistakable. She couldn’t stop talking about the ride, calling family and sharing her joy with anyone who would listen. “I never thought I’d get out with a bunch of good-looking guys!” she laughed to Pauline.
Since her wish, Janet has experienced a boost in her confidence and joy, a reminder that adventure is always within reach. Her story is proof that no matter how many years have passed, dreams never expire—they just need someone willing to make them happen.
