George Mencher, 88
Meet George Mencher, 88
At 88 years old, George has lived a life filled with love, purpose, and a deep commitment to others. Born in New York in 1937, he grew up with a strong sense of curiosity and connection, later building a life centered around family, education, and community. He shared 40 wonderful years of marriage with his first wife, Lenore, and has since found love again with his wife Shirley, with whom he continues to share life’s adventures.
George dedicated more than five decades to his work in audiology and speech pathology, helping to expand services across Nova Scotia, supporting seniors, and mentoring generations of students. Even now, he remains active and engaged, with a love for reading, history, and lifelong learning. Through every chapter, including personal loss and serious health challenges, George has remained positive, resilient, and full of gratitude.
But for more than 60 years, George held onto one simple wish.
During his time in the army, he was trained to drive a five-tonne truck, sparking a lifelong fascination with big rigs. Yet he never had the chance to sit behind the wheel of a tractor trailer. Too shy to ask, he carried the dream quietly, often wondering what it would feel like to see the world from that seat. “A full-grown man does not ask to play in a truck,” he once said, half laughing, but still hopeful.
With the encouragement of his family, George finally shared his wish and before long, it became a reality.
When the King Freight truck pulled up, his face lit up with pure, childlike joy. Climbing into the cab, asking questions, and taking it all in, George described the experience as feeling like a young boy again. “It was exactly what I wanted… and more,” he said. “Something I will continue to feel for the rest of my life.”
For a man who has given so much to others, this was a moment that was entirely his own. A lifelong dream, fulfilled.
Special Thanks: King Freight Lines for always going above and beyond for our wish recipients.
