Carmel Scanlan, 87

Meet Carmel Scanlan, 87

At 87 years of age, Carmel is a woman whose life has been defined by love, resilience, and a boundless giving spirit. Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, and raised in Whiteside, Richmond County, Carmel grew up surrounded by family and faith. She attended a small one-room schoolhouse and later studied at a Catholic convent in Mabou before heading out into the world to work and build a life of her own.

After a few years working at Sears in Halifax, Carmel returned home to Cape Breton where she met the love of her life, Joseph Scanlan. They married in 1957 and built a beautiful life together, rooted in hard work, music, and love. Their home was always filled with laughter and the aroma of something delicious from Carmel’s kitchen.

Carmel and Joseph raised eight children, four boys and four girls and though she lost one baby boy at birth, her love for her family only grew stronger. She poured her heart into creating a warm, happy home, somehow stretching each Thursday payday grocery order to last the week while still finding room for homemade bread and sweets.

When her hands weren’t busy in the kitchen, they were knitting. Carmel became famous for her cozy creations: sweaters, mitts, hats, and scarves for anyone in need. She has given away hundreds of pairs of “Grammie Mittens” over the years, refusing to accept payment for something that, to her, was simply an act of love.

After 50 wonderful years of marriage, Carmel’s world changed when Joseph was diagnosed with cancer and passed away just days later. A year later, she faced her own battle with the disease and won. She still lives in the home Joseph built by hand, finding strength in the memories they shared and the family they created. Though the days can sometimes feel long, Carmel keeps her spirits high with music and there’s one artist who has always brought her joy: Johnny Reid.

For Carmel, Johnny Reid’s music is more than just a soundtrack, it's comfort, hope, and companionship. She listens to him every day, dancing and singing in her living room, his lyrics lifting her heart. She especially loves the way he speaks about his parents and his grandmother; it's something that deeply resonates with her. For years, Carmel dreamed of what it would be like to see him in person.

Well, that dream finally came true. Carmel travelled all the way to Newfoundland to see Johnny Reid live and not only did she get to watch him perform, she met him in person. Before the concert, in the Meet and Greet line, Johnny knew about Carmel’s wish and saved her time to the end to spend a bit more time with her. When Johnny appeared, he wrapped Carmel in a warm hug and spoke with her for about 15 minutes, asking about her life and what her favourite song was. She told him it was “Darlin’.” He smiled and promised her something special and he kept that promise.

During the show, when it came time for Darlin’, Johnny found Carmel in the audience and from the stage he waved, pointed, and sang directly to her, dedicating the song in her honor. Carmel was beaming, her hands clasped, tears in her eyes. “I’m still on cloud nine,” Carmel said after. “He hugged me, talked to me, sang right to me. It was unbelievable.” The whole trip was filled with love and surprises. Carmel even got “screeched in” Newfoundland-style, had her nails done for the first time in her life (a gift from a local salon owner who refused to charge her when she heard about her wish), and wore new clothes her family bought specially for the occasion.

For a woman who has spent her life giving to others, this wish was a chance for Carmel to be celebrated. It brought her joy, confidence, and memories that she will cherish forever.

Carmel’s story reminds us all that it’s never too late to live your dream and that sometimes, the most beautiful moments come when kindness meets music, and love comes full circle. Her daughter Cathy said, “this wish was the best thing that happened to her in years and I am so grateful for “We Are Young” for making this happen for her … its like she got a reboot on life, she continues to get her nails done ever since Johnny Reid told her he loved her nails.
