Meet Arlene McKenna

Arlene’s story begins in Alberton, Prince Edward Island, where a strong work ethic was not something you learned, it was simply how life was lived. She spent years working on a potato farm, taking on everything from harvesting to sorting, and later played a vital role helping her daughter and son-in-law run their family restaurant. Even now, she laughs when she recalls the time a shipment was rejected after a bag of rocks somehow made its way into the load, a moment that brought real hardship at the time, but has since become a story she carries with humor and resilience.

Although she officially retired at 76 when COVID-19 slowed everything down, Arlene has never been one to stay idle, always finding small ways to lend a hand and stay involved.

Through every season of her life, one thing has remained constant: hockey. Saturday nights have long been reserved for Hockey Night in Canada, a tradition she has held onto for years. These days, her world is a little quieter, filled with simple pleasures like cooking, going for drives, and settling into her recliner to watch her favourite team. She proudly cheers on Auston Matthews, often joking that her grandson could be his twin.

In recent years, Arlene has experienced profound loss and challenges, including the passing of her husband and sister, along with serious health struggles within her family. Through it all, she has continued to put others first, offering strength and care even in the face of her own hardship.

Arlene’s wish was to attend a Toronto Maple Leafs game in person, surrounded by the people she loves, immersed in the energy of the arena, and experiencing the joy of a lifelong passion brought vividly to life. For Arlene, this was more than a game. It is a moment to feel celebrated, connected, and deeply cared for.
